Quality Evidence Guide

How to Read a Copper and Brass Material Quality Report

Plain-English guidance for buyers reviewing an MTC, COA or inspection report before a copper or brass RFQ.

What is a material quality report?

A material quality report is a traceability and inspection record for a named sample, heat or production batch. Buyers may see it called a Material Test Certificate (MTC), Certificate of Analysis (COA), mill certificate or inspection report. The report normally combines material identity with measured chemistry, dimensions and mechanical properties.

The report is useful only when the product form, grade, cited standard, sample or batch reference and test scope are clear. A report from one sample does not automatically prove that every size, batch or future order has the same result.

Fields buyers should understand

Report fieldPlain-English meaningWhat to confirm before order
Material / gradeThe copper or brass designation, such as TU1 or CW724R / CuZn21Si3P.Exact designation, alloy family and whether the buyer's drawing uses the same reference.
StandardThe specification used for limits and test methods, such as GB/T 1527-2006 or EN 12164:2016.Edition, product form and any customer specification that adds tighter limits.
Dimensions and conditionSize, shape, temper, hardness or processing condition of the tested material.Nominal size, tolerance, temper and whether the sample matches the quoted product.
Chemical compositionMeasured percentages of copper, zinc, phosphorus or other listed elements.Element limits, measurement basis and whether the standard requires balance or impurity limits.
Tensile strength / elongationMechanical results showing strength and stretch of the tested sample.Test direction, specimen condition, units, minimum limits and test method.
HardnessResistance to indentation, often used to describe condition or processing response.Hardness scale, range, location and relation to the required temper.
Surface / inspection resultVisible finish and whether listed checks were recorded as pass or conforming.Surface, edge, straightness, flatness, sampling plan and acceptance rule.

Representative sanitized report evidence

The following examples are translated from internal material reports reviewed for this guide. They show the kind of information a buyer may find; they are not a certificate for every product or order.

Representative sampleVerified information visible in the source reportBuyer interpretation
4N5 copper wire0.8 mm wire diameter; the report records a measured copper content of 99.9984% and trace-element results under its cited test method.Useful for understanding high-purity wire evidence. Confirm the applicable purity definition, diameter tolerance, temper and order document.
CW724R / CuZn21Si3PEN 12164:2016 reference; 530 MPa tensile strength; 21% elongation; polished surface noted. These are measured results for the listed sample. Confirm the required section, condition, chemistry limits and test method for the order.
TU1 copper tubeGB/T 1527-2006 reference; a 60 x 10 x 3,000 mm sample is shown with tensile results of 222-224 MPa, elongation values of 42.5-43%, and Cu + Ag at or above 99.97%.These values belong to the listed tube sample. Review each dimension and property against the purchase drawing, then confirm tube length, wall tolerance, ends, surface and packing.
TU1 copper rod / plateRepresentative records show chemical composition plus hardness, elongation and tensile fields; one TU1 rod record shows HB 83, 32% elongation and 253 N/mm2 tensile strength under its cited standard.Ask which product form and condition the record covers, then request the corresponding order-specific MTC or COA.

Privacy and document control: customer names, buyer addresses, contract numbers, batch identifiers, report/check codes, QR codes and employee signatures were removed from this public explanation. A third-party laboratory report is not reproduced here because its publication terms require written approval.

Measured value, standard limit and pass

  • Measured value: the number recorded by the laboratory or inspection team for the tested sample.
  • Standard limit: the permitted range or minimum/maximum value from the cited standard or approved order specification.
  • Pass / conforming: the recorded result was accepted against the stated criterion for that test and sample.
  • Sample-specific result: the evidence belongs to the named sample, heat or batch. It must not be silently generalized to other sizes or production dates.

For a reliable release decision, the buyer should compare the report with the drawing, purchase order, standard edition, inspection plan and any agreed deviation. If a report omits a limit, test method, unit or sample identity, ask for clarification before approval.

What to request in a copper or brass RFQ

  1. Product form: strip, coil, sheet, plate, rod, bar, tube, connector or custom profile.
  2. Grade and standard: include the exact designation and edition where known.
  3. Dimensions and tolerances: include critical size, length, flatness, straightness, edge or surface requirements.
  4. Condition: temper, hardness, annealed or other processing state.
  5. Tests and documents: MTC, COA, dimensional report, chemistry, tensile, elongation, hardness, surface or third-party inspection as required.
  6. Commercial scope: quantity, destination, packing, labels, requested delivery term and any trial-order requirement.

Send a drawing or previous specification when available. The quotation should state which documents are included and whether a report covers the supplied product, a representative batch or a pre-production sample.

Frequently asked questions

Is a material report the same as a product guarantee?

No. It records the stated sample and tests. Final conformity depends on the quoted product, order specification, sampling plan and acceptance criteria.

Why are customer and report identifiers removed here?

Public material should protect customer confidentiality and document-control information. The page keeps only verified technical meaning needed for buyer understanding.

Can Junkai Copper provide an MTC or COA?

MTC, COA and inspection document support can be discussed for the quoted product and order. Confirm scope, format and timing in the RFQ.

How do I request a report for my order?

Include product form, grade, size, quantity, destination and required tests in the RFQ. Add your drawing or standard so the document scope can be reviewed before quotation.

Request material evidence for an RFQ

Tell Junkai Copper the product form, grade, size, quantity, application and destination. State the MTC, COA, chemistry, mechanical or third-party inspection documents you need.
